Amy and I recently took some time off and rented a cabin up in the Blue Ridge mountains to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. The weather was unseasonably warm with temperatures in the mid to high 60’s with plenty of sunshine.

It was a quiet getaway nestled in the mountains surrounded by green hilly pastures and with a small mountain pond in front. We relaxed in the cool mountain air taking in all the amazing fall colors, visited several breweries (eight to be exact) and took some long leisurely drives along winding mountain roads on the way to two lake we fished. The first was Lake Moomaw. Though we didn’t figure out the fall pattern there for fish, the views were incredible and we enjoyed our day out on the water together. This lake is huge and I’d like to come back to paddle and fish it again sometime.

The next place we traveled to was Douthat State Park in Bath county. This park has a small 50 acre lake that holds rainbow, brook and brown trout and bass. I had luck casting a minnow stick bait and caught at least five rainbows trout. Once again the views of the surrounding mountains and the incredible fall colorful display was very enjoyable.

Amy and I just may have to make a yearly celebration visiting the Blue Ridge mountains and surrounding valley area.
