I was able to fish two different lakes at Fort AP Hill in Bowling Green Virginia.
This huge Army base that allows fishing at it’s numerous ponds and lakes.
Temperatures in the mid 80’s with abundant sunshine but very breezy which at times seemed to come from all directions.
I chose two of my favorites, Reynolds Run and the Upper Travis.
I started at Reynolds Run throwing a small swimbait in a pearl color and caught a small pickerel.
Then I tied on a rooster tail spinner on my ultralight but with all the muck and milfoil it made every cast a mess.
I worked my way back to some large lily pad areas and tied on a PowerTeam Lures Swinging Hammer Swimbait Texas rigged with an 1/18 ounce bullet weight. I casted it and retrieved it topwater across the pads using it’s paddle tail to create a commotion and got a nice 14 1/2 bass. The rest of the day I used the same technique and had great success enticing hits from Bass and Pickerel. I wanted to fish the Upper Travis so I left even though I had only fished some of the pads at Reynolds.
When I got to Travis I continued the topwater and caught another bass on my third cast. I did switch to a Whopper Plopper for a bit and did get a nice bass but all the other fish caught where on the topwater Swinging Hammer.
Final fish count: Seven Bass, Five Pickerel’
I did get to see a large Snapper Turtle climb out of the lake and make it’s way across the road probably a female looking for a safe place to deposit her eggs.
